So I got my base collection build up enough to get top 1000 in playing-for-points each week.
So my next natural Topps BUNT progression is to start to collect. However as a free-to-play player I only have the free coins each week to use.
So here is my strategy, I will select an older insert set (thinking the Silver Stars set), and to obtain these, I will buy a few packs of the newer insert packs (Swapped Out, HOF, Rookie), then if I pull anything, I can trade these new "hot" inserts for older inserts dupes from collectors. And repeat the process with always using the new packs inserts to obtain the older sets.
Does this seem viable?

That's how I do it. I've never dropped a dime on this. Made a good bit on eBay and have a decent collection.
I save for 2-3 months and then buy a new set hard, really focusing on the last and rarest released. You can sometimes get a kings ransom for them.
I don't trade them for older inserts, I usually go for sigs.
For instances, I pulld Maddux sig (second one pulled). I traded it for Getz Blue, Rizzo boost, Wright Fired Up, Hunter Leather, Brett 1st Edition, McCovey GM. I have since turned the Getz into $50 and Rizzo and Hunter to a Trout Fire.
I also got several sigs for Willie Mays HOF

This is exactly what I do since I've stopped spending money. I have a friend who helps me complete sets for the awards, so my only steady income of cards are award cards. The rest of the cards, like Red Sox inserts, I'll wait 1-3 weeks for, and start checking cards off my list. I open maybe 6-9 packs a week, and haven't pulled an insert (except hanley sunday night) this entire month.
