In the end, there are 42 Altuve Lightning cards. In the article for the card, there was a guy that stated that he had spent 5 MILLION coins trying to get one and didn't get a single Altive Lightning card. That's bonkers! It really makes me wonder if they turn them off at some point. There's always a handful that come out at the beginning and the number is less and less as the promo goes on. 5 million though... good grief.

The cynic in me suspects that this is a marketing ploy, and a potentially deceptive one at that. As people see Lightning cards being pulled from the packs, they think "well, looks like the odds aren't that bad to pull one" which leads these people to purchase coins and take a stab at getting a prestigious Lightning card. If, indeed, they turn them off at some point or adjust the odds, then these people will undoubtedly fail in their attempts to get the card. This is why I truly hate that Topps doesn't post the odds for some of their sets/cards. It makes it very difficult to determine whether it is worthwhile to chase the card or move on to something else. This also goes for SNB/FC/POTW.

I always go back to Trout. 100 realeased, 1:100 odds = only 10,000 packs. I spent over a million personally wiping out everything I carried over from 2013. At one point someone in that article added up over 200,000 packs bought with only 70 some odd out. I've done too much prgramming and know how easy it is to have an on/off button for this. Or a flag for people who sepd to get different odds. Or any other myriad of odds changing code that would be really simple to implement.

If they give odds like that, there should be a pack countdown as well. Also, the coding is just like an arcade machine or slot machine, or anything. There are ALWAYS difficulty controls. I have two arcade machines in my family room, 1999 NBA Jam and WretleQuest. Both have switches to change the difficulty inside the machines.

yup. all part of the "game" we play here. at the mercy of the topps brass. wouldnt be surprised if they turned a switch on and off throughout the day.
but we have to try and see both sides of this. if i buy a box of A&G from my LCS and they say i'll get 3 "hits" per box. its highly likely that i can buy the box and get those 3 hits. you could also go the route of opening pack by pack and stopping once you get the 3 hits but a lot of stores dont allow you to do that anymore (or at least the honorable ones - heck, some do it internally and only put out the "bad" packs). its why you should always take a box from a freshly opened case so you also have a chance at the case hit.
here, with just about every pack theyve created, you can stop at any time and walk away. unfortunately, the pack odds are not stated PER PERSON. its OVERALL. meaning, if a thousand ppl are busting packs, the odds are spread out throughout all those crackers (pun not intended, lol). but at the same time, and this has happened to be before, you could likely hit 2 sigs within a short window of time due to all the opening of packs.
