I think that it is time for some early predictions. Cy Young predictions. Let's take a look.
First of all, the obvious choice, Clayton Kershaw. With an ERA under 2 in 2013, Kershaw was able to take the award home easily. Can he do it again? I think that it's a matter of staying healthy. Kershaw has not had injury problems in the past, but who knows what may happen. If he us able to stay healthy, he will dominate his way to another great year, and has a very likely chance at the Cy Young Award.
The young gun: Jose Fernandez
The future looks very bright fir the 2013 Cy Young runner up and Rookie of the Year. His 2.19 ERA was astonishing, and he is another standout pitcher in the National League that has potential for this award. But, the question is can he get the award if he only has an ok w/l record? He plays for a team who's offense is nearly nonexistent, and if his record is only decent, will the votes still go his way?
The vet: Adam Wainwright
With a decent 2.94 ERA and a very solid 19-9 record, Wainwright is another starter I can see winning the award. I think that if he is able to get his ERA lower and keep the consistent w/l record he can snatch this award.
Can another Dodger win the award?
I see Ryu and Grienke as two more starters that have the stuff to notch the award. With a solid 3 ERA and a 14-8 w/l record in his rookie season, Ryu has the potential to be a very good pitcher. Grienke had an unbelievable 2013 season, with a 13-4 w/l record and a 2.63 ERA. If he can go the whole 2014 season with performances like he had in 2013, Grienke is another potential candidate for the award.
Stephen Strasburg
With an ok season in 2013, can we expect Strasburg to bounce back? With a 3 ERA and a sub .500 record, 2013 was not a great year for Strasburg. If he can bounce back and dominate hitters like we kone he can, Strasburg has the potential for this award.
Other potential candidates: Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Patrick Corbin, Johnny Cueto, Gio Gonzales, I'm sure I'm missing others, please let me know.
