Tonight, at 10:05 EST, the defending AL West Champs take on the Cleveland Indians at home in Oakland. Young and promising Sonny Gray will take on a very consistent veteran in Justin Masterson.
Masterson, who went 14-10 in 2013, is a veteran sinker balled who I think will improve on his great season in 2013. Tonight, it will certainly be a matter of keeping the sinker down. If Masterson can do this against the free-swinging Oakland squad, he can have a successful outing.
Gray, who went 6-2 with a 2.67 ERA in 2013, is making his first Opening Day start. As for him, it is a matter of getting rid if the jitters and keeping the butterflies out of his stomach. If Gray becomes too anxious, he may find trouble commanding the ball as well as we know he can.
As for the offenses, it depends on the heart of each teams lineups. The A's need their 3,4,5 guys in Donaldson, Cespedes, and Reddick to produce some runs. The Indians will need to rely on Carlos Santana and Jason Kipnis to produce for them.
If you look at these two teams, they are very similar in the ways they have been successful in the past couple years. It will be a very interesting game, series, and season to watch from these two teams!
