This should have been expected. Just like any other sport injuries have gotten worse which has to lead to changes to ensure the health of these highly paid athletes. Pitchers are so much bigger, stronger, and have completely different mechanics than they once did. 100 pitches nowadays is like throwing 120-130 pitches a decade ago. They need to be teaching kids at a young age on how to stretch, workout correctly, and the best mechanics to ensure that any damage to a arm is minimal. Im not sure that MLB is willing to address the growing concern now it might take a year or two. I could see a cap being set in place on the amount of pitches a pitcher can throw in MLB per game, week, month, season. I also think that the focus on what a MLB team wants is a pitcher has also aided this problem....every MLB team is looking for "power" pitchers and guys that can throw the ball really hard and really fast. What has been lost is the "placement" pitcher....the pitcher that studies tape and know what every batter they face likes and dislikes...what they can hit and what they can't and "places" the ball accordingly.
I never could get my velocity up to the 90's when i played....however i never had a problem making outs and pitching well by ball placement. It did help that i could throw a few different pitches but nearly every kid can now. I never had a major injury/surgery (yet) although i can feel damage at my older age now that i did as a child.... I think it was due to over pitching my fastball and trying to get extra movement. (what the coaches wanted)
Bring back the placement pitchers and the teaching behind it and these injuries fall back to where they once were. Its not about throwing 100 MPH or 100 pitches....its about being consistent...and allowing the team behind you help you make 27 outs.

Good read. Your right seems every pitcher once to k the batter. But it seems to result in blow arms or some type of arm issue. As for over use back in the day. That happen to me in little league and high school. I'm left handed and could throw junk. But over use cause me to have elbow and rotator issues by my senior year.

Saber metrics puts on high emphasis on strikeouts as it is a good forecast of a pitchers ability to get out of jams. That said, I'll take Greg Maddux's career over 99% of the flame throwers in the mlb.

One of the biggest problems (and I dunno if anyone's said this already) but its the young kids trying to throw curveballs and sliders. The arm and elbow twisting leads to injuries. That's why a lot of pro scouts tell young guys to work on their fastballs, get than controlled and then the clubs will teach them the breaking balls when their arm is developed and experienced. I know that these breaking balls don't help your arms, but I can't help myself when I'm pitching. A slider is my strikeout pitch. I only throw it on 0-2 counts but guys playing high levels are sometimes making that there first pitch.

My dad once told me that with how much harder guys are throwing, how much more we "learn" about the human body, and how much more focus we put into pitch counts and pushing pitchers right to the edge that some say some guy is going to flat out throw his arm off of his own body haha
Win Twins!

Haha. Very true. There's some disturbing videos on youtube about guys blowing out their arms. It sends chills down my spine.

And what is crazy I heard a story on the radio about a kid who threw like 194 pitches in a 15 inning game or something.
