I think Boston made out like a bandit here. I am not looking at the A's in this whatesoever. You get a MAJOR upgrade from Gomes to Cespedes. And lose what with Lester? Absolutely nothing! You had to resign him this offseason anyways. They are in the same boat with a better lineup and defense for him now. The Yankees are my second favorite team so boston ranks close to the Cards as my most hated. This sucks for other AL East teams. Rumor is Lester has already said he's coming back to Beantown no matter what next year.I'm not sure if it was this definite, but I heard that Lester floated the idea to management.

I think it was we'll calculated by a's. I don't believe billy would have sign cepedas after 15. So it makes since to go for it now trade away high salary for a rental.

He's not a free agent until 2017 though... this is only his 3rd year in the bigs.

And now the A's have traded the disgruntled and superfluous Milone to the Twins for Sam Fuld who will help with their CF woes.

I love this trade for a couple of reasons:
1) I'm okay with the A's winning it all... and I want Lester to get another ring. 2) Lester is probably thrilled he was sent to a winning team, this puts him with a good relationship with the Red Sox management for offseason negotiations 3) Billy Beane won't/can't give Lester the money he wants this offseason. The Red Sox still can. 4) Cespedes gets a try out in Fenway for the rest of the year... if he can perform well, the sox will try to sign him to an extension this offseason. If not, they can try to sign him next year. They have the money for it.
The Sox will truly win this if Lester comes back and they can sign Cespedes to an extension.
While I liked Gomes, he has zero role on this team.
This is a win-win for both clubs because Beane knows he can't keep Cespedes long term.

Having Lester in the rotation > Cespedes in the lineup
Especially during a postseason run. Lester was probably the WS MVP last year if Ortiz didn't have a historical and ridiculous world series.
The A's should cruise to the World Series and then anything can happen.
Beane deserves a championship for assembling this death row of SP's
