As a former Professional Reliever (Set-up Man/Closer) sometimes I came into the game with bases loaded 1 out, or similar situations... I also started in college and had many situations where a Double Play Ball saved me.... Not only that.. But as a pitcher, whether you are a starter or a reliever, you want to save bullets (throw less pitches)... So if I have a guy on first I am taught to go at the guy with low sinkers, cutters, etc to induce contact and get the ground ball... I played with 50% of the guys in the League right now, and when I see my buddies get a double play ball I am more happy for them than if they threw 13 pitches to get 2 strikeouts and so are they...
Leake just got a double play ball in the first inning to get out of a jamb... That should be worth as much as 2 K's in my book! Sound off and tell Bunt what you think..

I always want my team to get the ground ball and get the the DP to end the inning rather than work up his pitch count and eventually get 2 Ks. What team did you play for professionally? That's awesome!

I'm trying to keep this on the Double Play ball lol, but I played minor league ball for the Brewers and then Independent ball for 2 years in the American Association and in Australia for a year...

I agree. There's nothing more helpful at times.
Thinking back to the Jays/Tigers marathon. Jenkins pitched 6 innings out of the pen, including one bases loaded, game-saving, 1-2-3 double play. If he doesn't force that double play ball, game is probably lost or the bullpen gets burned more.
There's something beautiful about just fooling the batter and making him top it, not only getting himself out, but his teammate out in the process.

Absolutely! That is it exactly right there... It is harder to get a guy to hit it where you want it with one pitch than to have him foul a couple off and miss a few... And it is what the entire team wants. Keeps the defense on their toes, and gets your offense back up! There is nothing that could be better!

And a ground out should be worth more than a fly-out. That is why they keep track of a pitchers GO/AO ratio.. I guess we could go on and on about how the scoring could be better, but there are a bunch of guys who are great pitchers, but do not score much points because they aren't strikeout pitchers... I just wish it was a little more rewarding to play a guy that can go CG with 4 K's like Wainwright... Even though he only scores 350 on his gold, but a guy goes 6 innings with 10 K's and he scores 550...
