After 2 weeks of the Star Wars app (I got on 4 days in so I missed a few early inserts), I was able to get the top collection score (although my collection is not nearly as good as many other users). I wanted to share some advise that could help you in getting started
1) You don't need to have every card. Repeat this. You don't need to have every card. If Topps made it so everyone could have every card without spending money, noone would spend a cent on the app to get what everyone can have for free. Pick you you want and can afford and focus on that. If it is a favorite character or fraction or set, focus on that,
2) Chase the sets you like that are in your budget. See #1. It bears repeating.
3) Complete your red, white and blue sets first. Don't trade your FA or inserts to get them, but it should keep you busy and help you earn more coins
4) Never trade for a card the day it is released. If you pull one, don't lock it up, offer it up. For some reasons, users want these right NOW, even thought he wards isn't for weeks. I have gotten offers of 2 or 3 better inserts when the new one came out. Don't try to fleece people, but make it available on the boards until you get an offer you like. If you like Gold cards, you can usually get 1 for a new insert when it comes out (it costs an average of 125,000 coins to pull a Gold in the Darth Vader pack, so getting them for 1/5 of that is a much better idea). If you like Yellow cards, you can usually get offers of 6 - 8 Yellow cards for a new insert, depending on the rarity.
5) Don't chase the daily gold set unless you have money to burn. I made the mistake of doing this when I started. I dropped $100 a pop on three different days to chase the daily gold. The first day was a total waste because I bought the packs after Topps announced the Yellow cards. In five tries, I managed to get only 3 of the Purples, two of which had counts over 500. So basically, I spent $500 to get three purple cards that I could have gotten for a total of $50 on Ebay. You can get the Golds for any new inserts
6) Always pull the 1,000 coin pack for inserts that are in all base. The ratio is the same if you open 1,000 pakc as it is for the 5,000 packs. Maximize your coins.
7) Don't pull the packs that have 1 card (Rebels) that cost more to pull than it is worth. I tested this one with the Rebel Stormtrooper. The card was 1 in 20 packs and cost 5,000 coins per pack, so it would cost 100,000 coins to pull it. A few hours later, the Wide view came out with a ratio of 1 in 33 (33,000 coins to pull it). I was offered 2 Storm troppers and another insert in several trades for the Wide view!!! They paid 200,000 coins in pulls to trade for a 33,000 coin pull a few hours later. Don't be that guy (or girl).
8) Know what cards come on on which day. Once you pick the sets you want to focus on, figure out when those packs come out and budget your free coins for them (or save your money for them). If a card is a 1 in 20 ratio, save double that (40,000 coins) for that pack so you have a good shot at the card. If you have extra coins after pulling it, you can try for another to trade or save it for the next pack that you need. Many of the good packs come in bunches (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday's sets are not as good in my opinion, so you need to have you amo ready for Thursday
9) Don't pull the "On The Move" pack. You are paying an average of 8,000 for a FA card with nothing above a red. Once you have your reds, whites and blues finished, what is the point? Most of the weekly inserts average 30,000 coins to pull and you STILL get the FA cards in the packs as well. There isn't a user out there that will trade you any inserts for 4 FA cards. If you want FA cards, pull the insert and you can trade it for 7 - 9 FA cards, depending on which ones. Just post in the message board that you are posting the new insert for 9 FA cards and you will get offers. The offer is so lopsided, that I decline any offers of 9 FA cards for any insert.
9) Don't beg for cards. I've helped a lot of new users finish their base sets. Once I helped them do this. Rather than be appreciative, there are some that come back and try to get 9 good inserts for some white cards with the comment, "you have so much, please accept this trade". Whenever I see that comment, I block the person. People that have nice cards have them because they have time and money invested in their collections, so you should not expect a hand out. You wouldn't stand outside of an office building on payday and expect everyone to hand you some of their paycheck, would you?
10.) Help out new users. Offer to help them finish their base sets (not the I will give 1 white for 1 blue offer). New users help the app grow, which helps you current cards become more valuable, which helps you to be able to get more when you trade one. So even if the motive is to get more people hooked so you cards will be better, it's still better to help.
11.) Make connections with similar users in your budget group. Having an ally help you in getting cards you need without overpaying is a huge asset. Keep track of these users and try to be just has fair with them.
I'll post more when I think of them
