So I went to enter the afternoon contest today around 1, and it was already not available (games aren't until 3:30). Anyone know why some contests you can enter up to 5 min before games start and others close extremely early?

I don't know for sure, but I would guess that it was an error by Topps. As far as I've read, all contests are able to be entered until a few minutes before the games start.

I asked this of Mike on Twitter a couple weeks back after a similar experience. What he told me was that the standing contests (afternoon, twilight, Primetime and late night) have a pre-programmed start times. I know for instance that the start for the twilight is 4 and the Primetime is 7. So even though the twilight game isn't until 6, the contest officially closes at 4. With all the variables on game starts I get the need to have set banks of time for them to occur in. It just isn't well publicized.

That's an acceptable reason, certainly needs to be better advertised.

That would also explain why the noon games get left out.
